Overview
Coaching students who are undertaking a course that employs problem-based
learning (PBL) involves developing a specific set of skills. PBL
is really the antithesis of the didactic teaching model. Your students
need to work collaboratively to decide what types of information
they need and negotiate within their group to assigns the required
tasks.
Your role as a coach is one of guidance rather than a source of
information. You are not expected to be an expert in every field
of investigation and providing information to the students actually
works against the processes PBL is designed to promote.
Problem-based learning builds the students' generic skill and attribute
bases which better prepares them for their professional working
life. The transition to the information age has meant that professionals
need to be able to sort, process and assimilate large amounts of
information as well as developing a commitment towards lifelong
learning in order to be successful. PBL is designed to prepare students
for that type of professional life.
