Overview
Designing and developing a course in problem-based learning (PBL)
is not like any other you have done. PBL courses don't focus on
content but concentrate on creating authentic problem situations.
By creating these situations we simulate professional practice and
the complex issues that surround it. This is not to suggest that
we throw content out the door!! To the contrary, carefully designed
problem scenarios will determine the content that is required, and
as developers, we decide to position that content in authentic locations
where it can be found by the students.
Conceptually, the procedure for developing/locating the content
is not substantially different from what we would do for traditional
course development. What PBL does ensure is that we concentrate
on the content most relevant to the course.
