Overview

You may already be familiar with the the types of assessment used in problem-based learning. These assessment tasks are designed to measure your progress towards the overall goals of the course and will always require you to use the generic skills you have developed as a result of the PBL methodology used.

The types of assessment tasks are varied but can include:

  • the progressive completion of a journal that reports your learning and details the obstacles that have been overcome and how you achieved this.
  • peer assessment conducted by your fellow learners
  • critical self assessment of your own knowledge, skills and attitudes
  • presentations--these can be oral, written or using a combination of various media normally used by professionals in your discipline.

The assessment tasks you undertake should always be anchored and connected to your anticipated professional area. PBL assessment is an integral part of your learning experience and should not hold any surprises if you have been an actively participant in the learning activities conducted in your learning space.
